An outdoor place to build, explore, climb, create, and begin again.
The Wild Yard is envisioned as an outdoor adventure and creative-play space for elementary-aged children where the environment invites exploration rather than prescribing exactly how children should play. Instead of a traditional playground made primarily of fixed equipment, the space would combine thoughtfully designed permanent features with movable materials that children can stack, connect, rearrange, climb, swing from, and transform. A pile of materials might become a fort one week, a bridge the next, and part of an obstacle course after that. Periodically, the space can be returned to a “clean slate,” giving children the opportunity to imagine something entirely new.
The landscape itself would become part of the playground. Rather than beginning with a flat field and placing equipment on top of it, the land would be shaped with hills, valleys, pathways, climbing areas, hidden spaces, and changes in elevation that naturally invite movement and discovery. If feasible, water would become another central element, with a small circulating stream, waterfall, and shallow splash area where children can interact with moving water, stones, channels, and the landscape around them. Together, these elements would encourage children to climb, balance, build, cooperate, experiment, solve problems, take appropriate risks, and discover what their bodies and imaginations are capable of doing.
The Wild Yard would be available to children and families connected with The Space Collective as well as partner organizations, schools, churches, community programs, and families from the surrounding area. It could support structured activities led by existing partners such as Tukkae Climbing Playground while remaining primarily a place for child-directed exploration. Because the environment can continually change, it could also become a resource for camps, school visits, family events, community days, creative workshops, team activities, and new programs that have not yet been imagined. The goal is not to create another program that children must join, but to create a place that many different people and programs can use.
This reflects the larger vision emerging through The Space community center; creating places where people can experience belonging, whole-person health, meaningful relationships, discovery, and opportunities to grow into their gifts. The Wild Yard gives children a physical expression of those values. They are welcomed into an environment that says, “There is something here for you to discover, and you have something to contribute.” Through collaboration with existing partners and increasing participation from Thai families, leaders, schools, and community organizations, the playground can continue to be prototyped, listened to, learned from, and adapted over time. Rather than building a finished playground, the community center will be creating a living space for childhood adventure—one that can continue changing as the children and community around it change.
