Sometimes we need a small place to stop.
The Pause would transform a small, easily overlooked corner of The Space Community Center into a place intentionally set aside for stillness, prayer, reflection, and quiet conversation. Surrounded by the movement of people arriving, parking, playing, working, and participating in programs, this little garden would offer something different: an invitation to stop for a few minutes. Small trees and layered landscaping would create a gentle visual boundary from the nearby parking area without completely closing the space off. Within that boundary, a few simple places to sit would allow someone to pray alone, read, journal, have a meaningful conversation with a friend, or simply be quiet.
At the heart of the garden could be a small walking labyrinth formed primarily through landscaping—perhaps contrasting stones, gravel, plants, and simple pathways rather than a large constructed feature. Walking slowly toward the center would give people a physical way to quiet themselves, reflect, pray, or process what they are carrying. A small water feature at the center could become the visual and sensory anchor of the space: something peaceful to hear and watch, and a natural destination for the journey inward. Someone would not need to understand how to “use” the garden correctly. They could walk the path, sit beside the water, have a conversation under the trees, or simply pass through and discover that they want to stay.
The two large white walls surrounding the corner also create an opportunity for art to become part of the invitation. Rather than filling them with busy signage or instructions, murals could quietly communicate themes such as rest, presence, hope, belonging, prayer, or being known and loved. The artwork could eventually become a collaborative project with artists connected to The Nest, young people, Thai artists, or other creative partners at the Community Center. The murals would not need to explain the space; they could simply help someone feel that they have crossed from the activity around them into somewhere intentionally different.
The Pause would be a very small project physically, but it expresses something important about the larger vision of The Space Community Center, the Frung Fring Foundation, and the Prayer Space: not every meaningful space needs a program happening in it. Across the property we are creating places to climb, dance, make, play, create, receive care, gather, and learn. We also want to protect places where nothing is required of you. A child could wander the labyrinth while waiting for a sibling, two friends could have an important conversation, someone from Thrive could step outside to process something difficult, or a person could sit beside the water and become aware of God's presence. The Pause would simply make room for those moments—and trust that sometimes making room is enough
